The NameThere are three hypotheses. The most interesting has the name deriving from the Roman god Janus, in the versions Pax Iani (peace of Janus), Passus Iani, (passage to the temple of Janus, the remains of which are still visible along the old road between Chiusi and Perugia), or Pagus Iani, (village dedicated to Janus). The second interpretation is Pagus Dianus, (bright village, in a good position). Finally, Paciano (like many place names ending in -ano) from a Roman name connected with the owning of country estates: Pacius.
History• 9th cent.: a document mentions the curtis of Pacciano Vecchio, the oldest settlement located above of the present-day town and of which the tower “d’Orlando” remains.• 12th cent.: the Commune of Chiusi rules over the area; not until the end of the century will Paciano, along with Castiglione del Lago and Panicale, enter under the influence of the Commune of Perugia.• ca 1300: Paciano Nuovo (the present-day village) grows around the feudal castle.• 1373: Paciano, together with Panicale, is given by Charles IV to the count of Tuscany William of Beaufort, nephew of Pope Clement V, but this “Tuscan” period lasts only 3 years.• 1416: Paciano capitulates to the condottiere Braccio da Montone, who rebuilds the castle.• 1489: the Oddi, pursued by the Baglioni, lords of Perugia, take refuge in Paciano. The village later passes to the Papacy and to the city of Perugia.• 1643: the troops of Prince Mathias, brother of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinando II, occupy the village. But it returns once again to the Papal States.• 1798: Paciano falls under the papal rule of the Roman Republic. During the Napoleonic and Restoration period it becomes a commune joined with Panicale.• 1860: Paciano votes in a referendum to enter the new Kingdom of Italy.
