As the name indicates (Mont means mountain in French) Montmartre is a hill in the centre of Paris. The hill is crowned by an impressive white cathedral - Sacre Coeur - which can be seen from most of Paris.
In some areas this means that you have a steep walk ahead of you to get to your destination. In most cases however the many metro stations in the area will bring you very close to where you want to go.
The lively entertainments area the Pigalle is closely linked to Montmartre. Here one can find the folies bergere caberets which had it’s peak in the Belle Epoque area. The most famous of them all is the Moulin Rouge dance hall. Immortalized by the can-can paintings of Toulouse-Lautrec and later by the movie of the same name. The high kicking routines continue today on the Moulin Rouge in glittering Las Vegas-style revues.
Sacre Coeur
The cathedral, which actually is a basilica, was initiated in 1875 as a result of a vow made by two businessmen Alexandre Legentil and Rohault de Fleury. They promised to finance the basilica if Paris was spared in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 -71. Even though Paris was under siege invasion was averted. In 1914 the cathedral was finished – right at the outbreak of the First World War.

Paris is a sightseer's dream. It's not just the long list of things worth seeing - so much history, so many monuments, all those museums - but, as a bonus, the bag that holds this dizzying number of goodies is of manageable dimensions.
You can get a good feel for Paris on a day trip, something you can't say of many capital cities; and while its famed beauty doesn't extend to every last cranny, there are few streets here that are not worth walking along.
Public transport is frequent and cheap, and there are plenty of guided tours to show you around. But to see Paris as a living city, set out on foot. Its 20 arrondissements spiral out, clockwise and in ascending order, from the Louvre.
The best way to visit a large number of museums is to purchase he Carte Musées et Monuments (www.intermusees.com), in one-day (€18), three-day (€36) and five-day (€54) formats, sold at museums, Métro stations and tourist offices.
Where a museum does not have its own website, details can be found at www.paris.fr/musees. Most of the national museums close on Tuesdays; most of the municipal museums close on Mondays.
