The Ferme aux Vieux Galets was built about a hundred years ago with stones from the nearby Durance river. The then farm house, built as the working quarters of an adjacent manor, was solidly constructed from traditional materials. The house is situated on the northern fringe of the town of Sisteron. A gravel driveway of about 150 m leads up to it from the D 951 country road. The house has a surface area of 180 m², excluding annexes and the total property covers 5600 m². The property is surrounded on all sides by meadows and trees. Trees also line the boundary of our property. Within the confines of the courtyard splashes a fountain fed by its own spring, whilst a 100-year-old plane tree and a lime tree give plenty of shade. The Ferme aux Vieux Galets was acquired by our family in 1992, at which time the house was very dilapidated. We restored it painstakingly and with lots of love, doing much of the work ourselves and leaving nothing but the outer walls untouched. Whilst restoring the building we set great store by preserving its original character. Thus we gave preference to traditional construction methods and materials wherever possible. We collected old construction materials from decayed houses and private individuals and made use of them rebuilding the house. For example the floor tiles, which are at least as old as the house itself came from a number of different buildings in the area, we cleaned and polished them manually one by one before they found a new home in the Ferme aux Vieux Galets. The ceilings have been constructed from larch beams with the gaps between filled with plaster as was formerly the custom in Provence and all the doors are ancient, restored doors made from solid pine, walnut or oak. As you can see, we have set great store by details.

been furnished individually, partly with period furniture. Each covers approximately 40 m², is on the ground floor and has a door leading to the enclosed courtyard. The bathrooms have modern facilities though the style of the house has been borne in mind even here: it is a provençal bathroom with handmade faïences (tiles) that is waiting for you. Conveniences are very important to us. All apartments have a kitchen which is fully equipped. From plate to pot, from microwave to dishwasher, you will not miss anything. In the bedroom you will find a double bed. The pull-out couch in the living-room can sleep another two people. While restoring the house, we did not forget modern technology, which has been integrated unobtrusively. Each apartment is provided with satellite television (ASTRA), radio or stereo, and central heating. A washing-machine and ironing facilities are available in an annex. Owing to the old construction methods with natural-stone walls with a thickness of 60cm the apartments stay pleasantly cool even during periods of extreme heat in the summer. In the garden old trees give plenty of shade. For each apartment a designated area is available in the courtyard or meadow with a table and chairs. A barbecue and deckchairs invite you to stay and rest. For example, what about a French breakfast in the unpolluted, warm air of Provence? Or what about enjoying the mild evenings with candlelight and red wine?

Sisteron is a charming small town on the northern fringe of Provence. Where the Alps gradually meet the plain, where in the winter snow is separated from rain, where you find the flowering lavender, that's where this cosy little town is situated. However, cosiness has not always been an asset of the area. The citadel, a stronghold of the sixteenth century, keeps watch over the town, and it’s here that Napoleon could have been stopped on his way back from Elba (Route Napoléon). Ancient forts and religious buildings bear witness to an eventful history. But today the charming lanes invite you to stroll around. The provençal market attracts you with its colours and scents. Sisteron is situated on the Durance river, the stratified rocks being one of its landmarks. It has about 8000 inhabitants but during the summertime it is brimful of hustle and bustle. Sisteron is a good starting-point for a number of activities in its vicinity, ranging from sports activities to cultural highlights such as "the nights of the citadel" (music and theatre performances of international renown with the citadel as their backdrop). Sisteron also offers an open-air swimming-pool free of charge.
