About five minute from bustling Funchal is the posh villa area Garajau. Villa Echium is found here among beautiful houses in their well kept gardens. This is far enough from the centre to enjoy a quiet, relaxing and almost sleepy atmosphere. However, just two minutes away by foot, crossing a ten meter tunnel, another world opens itself with super markets, restaurants; take away, bars and bottle stores. In the house there are two apartments. The bottom apartment has one bed room, with the space for an extra bed in the changing room. It has a modern kitchen and a modern decorated lounge. From here you have direct entrance to the garden with its pool. There are facilities for grilling in the garden or at the upper terrace. The upper apartment is more classical decorated. It has a well equipped kitchen, dining room, a lounge and two bed rooms. From the terrace you have view over the garden and the sea. The house has a private parking There is diving, tennis, walking, jogging and sailing sports available in the immediate area. It takes 5 minutes to the nearest golf course.

Ten minutes by car from Funchal, the capital of Madeira, there is a villa area called Garajau. The place is named after a sea-bird, the tern, which in former days had its haunt on the impressive rocks where they were living in multitudes. Garajau is inhabited by the upper middle class people of the capital of the island, residing in lovely villas in beautiful gardens. This is a fairly quiet area, however, just two minutes by foot, there are restaurants and take away, supermarkets and a bakery. Villa Echium is one of these villas. Only 40 years old, it was designed by the famous Dutch architect van Velden. It now consists of two separate apartments. The top floor apartment has two bed rooms, sleeping 4 persons, and the ground floor has one bed room, but with the possibilities for sleeping 3 persons. The top apartment, with its classical interior decoration, has a terrace with view towards the sea and is surveying the garden. The more modern decorated ground-floor apartment has its own direct way out to the garden from the living-room and from the bed room. The garden is furnished for sunbathing. It has a lively pond with fish, frogs, turtles and water plants. There is also equipment for grilling. There are two separate apartments in the house. The upper floor apartment has two bedrooms, lounge, living room, dining room, one bathroom, one separate toilet and a modern, fully equipped kitchen. The interior decoration is classical, mixed Portuguese and Scandinavian. This apartment is suitable for handicapped persons. The spacious terrace towards the sea is surveying the garden. The downstairs apartment has one bedroom, a changing-room big enough for an extra bed if wanted, a bathroom, a drawing-room and a modern kitchen with dining space. You can go out into the garden both from the drawing-room and the bedroom. The interior decoration is modern. The garden is equipped with chairs for sun-bathing and garden furniture. It is a place for relaxing. There is also a pond with beautiful water plants, fish, frogs and turtles. Small children should be looked after since they can be too excited seeing all this water life. There is equipment for grilling in the garden or on the terrace.

Garajau is near the main road between the airport and Funchal, 10 minutes from each place. The taxi fare is 10 Euros. The immediate neighbourhood offers you the possibility of executing different sports, tennis, diving, sailing, jogging, walking, there is only a five minutes drive by car to the nearest golf course. All what you need for your daily life comfort, shops, restaurants etc. can easily be reached by foot within few minutes. Just go through the archway (tunnel, see below) of the Hotel Dom Pedro Garajau and it is all there.

How to find the house Address: Rua Tristao Vaz Teixeira 150, Garajau. By taxi The easiest way is to take a taxi at the airport. There should not be any problem with the address but for safety’s sake you could show it to the driver before you enter the car. If any problem, tell him to go through the tunnel (arch-way) of the “Hotel Dom Pedro Garajau ”, about 30 meters further on in the same street to the left is Villa Echium. Driving your own car As you leave the airport follow the signs pointing out the way to Funchal. After about 10 minutes there is a road sign reading “Garajau”, exit no.15, and it is time to leave the autostrada. This is in the Modelo Supermarket area and the Cancela Industrial centre. Take the off ramp into Garajau and keep to the left. Follow the hair pin bend into an easterly direction and continue until you arrive at the first group of shops to the left. Restaurant Franco’s is in the corner and next to it the bakery. In front of this on the opposite side of the street is the Hotel Dom Pedro Garajau with an archway. Go through the archway and you are now in the road where the Vila Echiun is, the first building to the left after the first cross-street. The address is Rua Tristao Vaz Teixeira, 150.
