The Landscape of Wangerland is a sight to behold in itself. A tour through the fields, meadows, and villages offers much to discover. At the National Park House Wangerland, you can learn about the landscape, the tides, and the tidal creeks. A walk on Schillig's sandy beach reveals the wreck of a ship that stranded here in 1962. Parts of the hull still protrude from the sand, providing an excellent photo opportunity. In the district of Horumersiel, the Stumpenser Windmill, built in 1816 in Dutch style, now houses the Trout and Holiday Farm Stumpenser Mühle along with two adjacent lakes. In the summer, the lakes are open for fishing from 7 AM to 8 PM. Additionally, night fishing is available on Fridays and Saturdays. (As of August 2023)
During a pleasant beach vacation in Schillig, everything revolves around the North Sea. The UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea along the North Sea coast is a unique habitat for a variety of animals and plants. On a guided mudflat hike, you can discover many things that would otherwise remain hidden: mud crabs, ragworms, wading and migratory birds, grey seals, and much more. At low tide, you can walk to the uninhabited island of Minsener Oog. At high tide, the small island lies in the middle of the North Sea, so don't miss the chance to visit!
If you're planning a vacation with a dog in Wangerland – along the coast, you'll find family-friendly holiday apartments in Schillig nearby. The dog beach is also not far. Special mudflat hiking tours for dogs are even offered. Children also love Schillig Beach. Blue sea, white sandy beach, and plenty of space for fun and relaxation are available here. For those who like to stay active, Wangerland offers opportunities for cycling, hiking, horseback riding, tennis, or action-packed water sports. Due to the consistent winds, especially wind and kite surfers get their money's worth on the beaches of the North Sea.
Treat yourself to the delights of Frisian cuisine, which offers a variety of regional specialties. Near your private holiday apartment in Schillig, there are numerous restaurants, cafes, and taverns offering everything from simple kale dishes to sophisticated international creations. Directly from the North Sea to your plate, not only the famous shrimp but also freshly caught fish like plaice or herring are served. A shrimp or pickled herring sandwich is a must-have during any excursion on the beach or at Schillig's harbor.
The Künstlerhaus Hooksiel serves as a meeting place and creative workshop for artists and art lovers from the Wangerland region. The house welcomes art enthusiasts with an exhibition and event program from Tuesday to Sunday, 2 PM to 6 PM (As of August 2023). The Shell Museum in the old town hall in Hooksiel displays a collection of shells, shellfish, and corals. The museum serves as an information center for the protection of flora and fauna, providing insights into the North Sea habitat. Step further back in history at the Romanesque St. Sixtus and Sinicius Church in Hohenkirchen, dating back to the 13th century. The church is made of intricately carved granite blocks and features a small, pointed bell tower that is a must-see during your visit.
