After the first happy days on the beach and in the water, it's time to explore the surroundings of your holiday apartment in Orihuela Costa. The main town of Orihuela is, after all, a centuries-old bishop's seat. One of the most splendid buildings is the 16th-century Convento de Santo Domingo, which features a mix of Gothic, Renaissance, broken, and Rococo style elements. With 18,000 square meters, it is one of the largest monuments in the Valencian region. The Gothic Santa Iglesia Catedral del Salvador dates back to the 13th century. The cathedral houses a museum of sacred art. The old town itself offers numerous town palaces, monasteries, churches, and squares from the past centuries. It is a pleasure to stroll through the alleys and let the different facades pass by. The same applies to the regional capital, Murcia. The cathedral, built between 1394 and 1465 in the Catalan-Gothic style, dominates the central square of the city (Plaza Cardinal Belluga). The portal is considered a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque. The bishop's palace, also located on the square, dates from the 18th century. The Glorieta square with the town hall also dates from the same period. Many alleys of the old town are car-free. You can stroll undisturbed or linger in one of the many bars.
The beaches of the Costa Blanca are legendary - white sand and turquoise sea in front of an azure blue sky. In the surroundings of your holiday home or private holiday apartment in Orihuela Costa, numerous beaches invite you to swim in the Mediterranean Sea. The large Cala Bosque in La Zenia is very suitable for families with small children. A romantic coastal path leads from La Zenia to Cabo Roig, where there are more beaches ideal for children. At Playa Flamenca, you can stroll along the promenade and enjoy the sun.
Although paella is not Spain's national dish (and is hard to find in some regions), the Costa Blanca is one of its birthplaces, and accordingly, good and diverse paella can be found in Orihuela Costa and its surroundings. Pay attention to where locals eat their paella. The individual ingredients (seafood and/or meat, e.g., rabbit and vegetables) should be clearly discernible. Fresh fish from the Mediterranean has become expensive due to declining stocks. Sea bass and monkfish can be found on the menus of restaurants, as well as chipirones (small squid) and pulpo (octopus). Meat is usually grilled. The Botifarra/Butifarra, a pork sausage in black or white versions, is very tasty. It can be eaten hot or cold. Good wines are available in every restaurant. The local wines come from the esteemed regions of Valencia and Alicante as well as Utiel-Requena and Yecla, located further inland.
Your holiday apartment or your private holiday home in Orihuela Costa is located on the Costa Blanca just south of Torrevieja. The most convenient way to get to your accommodation in Orihuela Costa is via the airport of Alicante. From there, it takes about 40 minutes by rental car along the coastal road N-332 to the south, past the large salt flats of Sa Pola and the popular holiday resort La Marina. As the name suggests, Orihuela Costa is located directly on the sea. The main town of Orihuela is 40 kilometers inland.
