What do you need to experience in Agaete?

The Finger of God

In the old town center of Agaete, you will find impressive Canarian mansions with their typical wooden balconies. Here you will also find the central square and the parish church Iglesia de la Concepcion. During the annual Bajada de la Rama celebrations, the image of the Snow Maiden stored in the chapel of Puerto de las Nieves is brought to the church. There, the Mother of God is called upon as an advocate for rain. The Park Huerto de las Flores is also interesting, with impressive examples of endemic and tropical flora. At the harbor, Puerto de las Nieves, the Dedo de Dios, or Finger of God, stood tall until 2005. However, this rocky needle was snapped off by a tropical storm. If you rent a private holiday apartment or holiday home in Agaete, you can also enjoy many exciting activities. For example, you can go on various hiking tours of different difficulty levels. A particularly varied hike is through the Barranco de Agaete gorge, where you will pass through one of the most beautiful valleys on Gran Canaria. Not far away is Los Berrazales. This place used to be a spa, and its water was used for bathing cures. The "blue gold" is now bottled and sold. A trip to the city of Galdar, which has a historical old town, is also recommendable. The Cueva Pintada Museum is worth visiting, as it will provide you with interesting information about the history of the region. Along the northern coast of the island, you will reach the untouched fishing village of Puerto de Sardina. Here you will also find a particularly beautiful stretch of beach. The capital, Las Palmas, where the pulse of the island beats a little faster, is always worth a visit.

Without a doubt, highlights of a family holiday with a holiday home or holiday apartment are the various small beaches in Agaete. Particularly beautiful is Playa de las Nieves beach, which is surrounded by an impressive natural landscape. The towering western cliffs are a unique postcard motif. There is also a beautiful beach promenade here. Towards La Aldea, you reach Playa de Guayedra - a beach of stones and black sand. Other beaches are called Sotavento, El Risco, Faneroque, Playa de Juncal, and Playa de las Salinas.

Typical dishes of Canarian cuisine include ropa vieja (stew with chickpeas) or papas arrugadas con mojo (wrinkled, boiled potatoes with garlic sauce). Goat meat, called cabrito, is also popular. If you order morcilla, you will get fried blood sausage with raisins. Potaje de berros (watercress soup) is also considered a specialty. Delicious desserts are leche asada, bienmesabe, or tunos (peeled fruit of cacti). The cuisine on Gran Canaria has developed some interesting peculiarities that are worth discovering and tasting.
