The city is situated in the valley which has an area of 100 km2, at the point where the Soła River and the Koszarawa River converge, at Żywieckie Lake, at the height of 345-350 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by mountains: the Beskid Śląski in the west, the Beskid Mały in the north, the Jałowieckie Range in the east and the highest peaks of the Beskid Żywiecki: Babia Góra (1725 m), Pilsko (1557 m), Lipowska (1324 m), Rycerzowa (1226 m) and Wielka Racza (1236 m) in the south. The beautiful and varied landscape of Żywiec area is composed of towering mountains, long ridges with vast woods and picturesque meadows, charming valleys cut by mountain brooks, winding tourist trails and numerous view points. From the meadows, there is a panoramic view on densely scattered fields and farms. Żywiec is one of the greatest tourist resorts in Poland. Nearby Żywieckie Lake is a paradise for fans of water sports. Żywiec is a city that is interesting in terms of its history, ethnography and architecture. Many valuable monuments can be seen here; these are, for example, the Old Castle and Habsburg Palace surrounded by the beautiful landscape park, the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary.s Birth from the 15th century and the Holy Cross Church from the 14th century. The city is also a powerful cultural centre. At the break of July and August, an amphitheatre, situated at the slope of Mount Grojec and at the riverside of the Koszarawa, invates for the Week of Beskidian Culture. This festival includes the Festival of Polish Mountain Folklore, the International Folklore Encounters, and a number of attendant events. Every year in autumn one can listen to medieval, renaissance and baroque music at the courtyard of the castle during the Days of Musica Antiqua. The City Chamber Music Orchestra, the choirs: .Acord. and .Lutnia., brass bands and folk groups perform here regularly. Żywiec is one of the most important industrial centres in the south-east part of the Silesian voivodeship. Foreign investors and partners are willingly coming in order to forge partnership with Żywiec citizens. The convenient location at the route of trade trails and the closeness of Vienna, Cracow and Katowice have contributed to the fact that many firms supported by foreign capital operate here.
