At Le Moulin De La Combe you may just want to laze around the swimming pool, find a shaded area under the trees to read your book, wander up to the local bar for an aperitif and a game of pool, or have fun cooking a barbeque. However, for the more active holiday goer there is still plenty to do. The Mill is 3 miles from the Historic town of Melle. You can easily spend a day shopping (the market is on Friday morning) or seeing the sights. The town has three beautiful historical churches, plenty of bars in which to sit and watch the world go by or, for the ramblers, the old royal silver mines and a path of discovery are worth a visit. There is also a cinema and squash courts. The countryside surrounding Melle is also very pretty and you can enjoy a scenic drive to visit other villages, perhaps on their market day. The brocante shops are also worth visiting as they are full of little treasures and are dotted down almost every country lane - just look out for the signs. Alternatively, spend a day on the fabulous sandy beaches of the Charente-Maritime and visit the bustling harbour town of La Rochelle with its fine houses and quaint arcaded streets, all within one hour's drive. Niort is a 30 minute drive and is an excellent day out. You can play golf or look around the many shops, meeting up late afternoon to sit at one of the pavement bars for an aperitif and a reasonably priced meal. To the west of Niort you will find the Marais-Poitevin or "Green Venice". The protected park is a rich fenland labyrinth, crossed by hundreds of canals, now mainly used for pleasure trips in flat-bottomed boats (although some of the locals still use it to transport goats and cattle). Visit Cognac and spend a day touring the distilleries and wineries, sample the cheeses and the fresh crusty bread. Poitiers is steeped in history with its Romanesque churches, half-timbered houses and ancient marketplace dominated by the cathedral "Notre-Dame". Just 10 minutes drive from the city centre you arrive at what is, undoubtedly, the region's largest tourist attraction, Futurescope. This is Europe's premier image theme park. Attractions include giant IMAX cinema screens, 3D cinemas, virtual reality Internet Park and much more. There are also several very nice golf courses within one hour's drive of the farmhouse. However, you choose to spend your holiday, we guarantee you'll never be bored in this area.

Melle , Deux-Sèvres , Poitou-Charente , France

Poitou-Charentes lies in sunny mid-western France and comprises four administrative departments, each with its own lively and attractive regional capital city: Deux Sevres (capital Niort) Vienne (capital Poitiers) Charentes (capital Angouleme) Charentes-Maritime (capital La Rochelle) Each of the four departments possesses its own regional identity, largely as a result of its geographical location. The westernmost region includes both flat, grain-producing plains and coastal marshland - much of it a protected nature reserve. Inland to the north lie the celebrated network of tranquil waterways and lush meadow known as the Marais Poitevin, whilst further south the Cognac area is characterised by its wealth of productive vineyards supplying grapes for both the illustrious brandy and its aperitif close relative, Pineau de Charentes. Elsewhere, in northern Charente and Vienne, for example, you will pass through gently undulating fields of sunflowers, maize, rape and wheat. Throughout the region, the landscape also features coppiced woodlands of chestnut, oak, cherry, holly and acacia, lending colour throughout the seasons. Here and there, lone mature walnut trees stand like sentinels. The effect, whatever the season, is both beautiful and rich in its variety.
