If you like ancient buildings full of history you'd love Casa Rambaldo, an ancient house belonging to the Castle of Strassoldo di Sopra: a finely restored castle hamlet in Italy's small border region of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, not far from the border with Austria (1 hour's drive) and Slovenia (20 minutes' drive), the seaside (20 minute's drive) and north of Venice (1 hour's drive).
Today, after supervising years of meticulous restoration work, the owners have opened the doors of their home to those travelers in search of history, culture and charming hospitality.
Casa Rambaldo was one of the medieval Guards' houses (the other is called Casa Artuico). It is distributed on one floor plus a mezzanine and has:
- a double room with twin beds and direct access on its private garden
- a mezzanine with a big double bed
- a bathroom with big green-blue mosaic enclosure
- a vast equipped kitchen and dining area with access on the garden
- a sitting area underneath the mezzanine with big sofa, armchair, chairs, desk and Sat-tv,
- a lovely private garden with access on the castle's main garden with table, chairs, deck-chairs and grill for eating and resting out
The house is very well furnished with ancient furniture, lovely terracotta floors, ceilings with wooden beams and is equipped with every comfort.
A jewel of the castle are its garden, surrounded by spring-water streams. In Strassoldo the ground is never colder than 13 Celsius degrees and this has a beneficial influence on nature and allows many exotic species to grow in the area – from old Chinese rose bushes to palm trees. Canadian maple trees bring Indian Summer colours in Friuli.

The moment they pass under the "Cistigna" arch, guests find themselves immersed in the magical world of Castle of Strassoldo di Sopra, the first recorded mention of which dates back to more than a thousand years, when it was constructed for the Counts of Strassoldo, who still live in the main building.
A few centuries later the original castle split into the “Castello di Strassoldo di Sopra” (Upper castle) and the “Castello di Strassoldo di Sotto” (Lower castle), still existing and inhabited by the same family and this is why you breathe the charming atmosphere of a place that is rich of family memories and tradition.
To reach the main building of the castle of Strassoldo di Sopra you have to pass the ancient “Cistigna” arch (entrance arch) and stroll along the cobbled path of the “borgo vecchio”. On the right side there the “Guards' houses"(Casa Rambaldo and Casa Artuico) and “La Vicinia” (former administrative and judicial centre). At the end of the path you reach the central building of the castle, connected to the church of St. Nikolaus by a pretty “overpass” and leaning on a tower dating back more than a thousand years. Behind the church there are the former stables, artisans’ houses, granaries and archives. A few steps further there’s a lovely rice mill, after which you enter into the area of the Lower Castle.
The castle still preserves ancient family furniture and paintings and the magical atmosphere of the past.
The cute little village of Strassoldo developed around the ancient castle.
