The town of Winterberg, located in the beautiful Sauerland region, lives up to its name: thanks to the above-average snowfall, you can usually find a blanket of snow here for more than 100 days a year. These are of course ideal conditions for winter sports enthusiasts. And so Winterberg is also considered to be the most important winter sports resort in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Winterberg is situated on the so-called Winterberger Hochfläche, just under 668m to 415m above sea level. The town itself as well as the 14 villages belonging to it extend over several mountains. The popular skiing area Skiliftkarussell Winterberg is not only located on one mountain, but on five: the Kahler Asten, the Poppenberg, the Bremberg, the Herrloh and the Kappe. In total there are 21 ski lifts, 30 ski slopes and a 120 km long network of cross-country ski trails in the ski lift carousel. Here, beginners as well as professionals get their money's worth when skiing and snowboarding.
In addition to four smaller ski jumps, this one in particular is an attraction. It not only serves as a training facility, but has also been the venue for the German Championships as well as the Summer Grand Prix of the Nordic Championships. The ski jump can be used by visitors in summer as well as in winter.
A visitor magnet that attracts many overnight guests is the bobsleigh track in Winterberg. With a length of over 1600 m, 15 curves and a maximum gradient of 15%, it is one of the fastest bobsleigh runs in the world. No wonder that it has already been the venue for the Wok World Championships three times, created by Stefan Raab. Alternatively, there is the possibility to ride a Snowscoot in Winterberg. This is more or less a bicycle on sliding surfaces.
Of course, you can also spend a wonderful winter holiday here without skiing or bobsleighing. The snow-covered landscape invites to long walks or romantic sleigh rides. A real adventure, where the winter landscape shines in a new light, is to take part in a torchlight hike.
But Winterberg is not only a popular destination in winter, there is also plenty to experience here in summer. The gently rolling hills and unspoilt nature then invite you to extensive outdoor activities in the fresh air. Especially hikers, mountain bikers and motorcyclists appreciate the town in the heart of the Sauerland in the green season.
