Valais delicacies – dried meat, fruit bread, and Raclette
The cuisine in Valais is a typical alpine cuisine with some specialties. The basic ingredients come from the sparse cultivated areas and the short summer season. Due to the long winters, ingredients had to be preserved for a long time. Valais dried meat is one such specialty, which has been produced for centuries. In Germany, this dried meat is known as Bündnerfleisch. It is a perfect provision for long hikes. In the valleys of Valais, there are numerous types of cheese. The region is famous for its variety of Raclette cheeses. The typical Valais Raclette successively melts cheese from different valleys such as Val d'Anniviers, Turtmanntal or
Goms. Valais rye bread carries its own AOC seal. The bread is quite heavy. If you have it for a snack on a hike, you are sure to be satiated. Valais fruit bread with dried apricots is also delicious. Although beer is more widespread as a meal accompaniment, Valais wine, which grows in some unusually high and steep locations, should also be mentioned. Several wineries can be visited at Chanton. Excellent wines also come from the nearby
Ticino and
Lake Lugano.
Sledding - when it's supposed to be really fun
Look forward to your
holiday in the mountains in Aletsch with the ski and hiking areas around Belalp and
Bettmeralp. The places are car-free, and you always have a view of the Aletsch Glacier. Numerous hiking opportunities start directly from your holiday home – for example, to the Aletsch Glacier, the Massaschlucht in the World Natural Heritage area of Blatten or along historic pass routes. A hiking trail from Belalp leads across a suspension bridge to Riederalp. Children love Veros Hexenweg (Witch's Path) in Blindtal, where they can search for witch's gold pieces. The ski area at Belalp extends from 1,300 to over 3,000 meters above sea level. From Belalp, it continues down to the valley station in Blatten. A few kilometers east of Bettmeralp is the Aletsch Arena ski area with over 100 kilometers of perfectly groomed slopes. In addition, there are 75 kilometers of groomed winter hiking trails, a three-kilometer-long snowshoe trail, and a 13-kilometer-long sledding run leading from Fiescheralp down to Lax. It's great fun for both young and old. If you don't own a sled, you can rent one. There are also holiday apartments, houses, and chalets with Wi-Fi for travelers with children and pets. The Sparrhorn is a mountain in the Bernese Alps north of Belalp in the canton of Valais. It lies at the eastern end of the mountain range south of the Oberaletsch Glacier, west of the Aletsch Glacier. A path from Belalp leads to the summit. Other four-thousand-meter peaks await you here.
Breathtaking mountain world under UNESCO protection
The entire area of Jungfrau-
Aletsch-Bietschhorn, in which your holiday accommodation in Belalp is located, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. A highlight is a hike through the 6.5-kilometer-long Massaschlucht, which was created by the glacier's meltwater. The gorge offers spectacular hiking and climbing routes and the possibility for canyoning. Another challenging hiking trail with breathtaking views of the Valais Alps is the tour to the Oberaletschhütte at 2,640 meters above sea level. By the way, the journey to Belalp with the aerial cableway is already worth a visit: it overcomes almost 800 meters of altitude from Naters up to the alp. Down in Naters, a historical village tour through the old village center awaits. The starting point is Judengasse (established in 1393). The market square dates from 1276, and St. Mauritius Church from the early 11th century. Now rent a cozy accommodation, a house, or a chalet with idyllic views in the best location according to your personal wishes with Wi-Fi and enjoy relaxing ski holidays with your family.
