The Müritz National Park is the largest German national park and, with an area of 120 km², the largest contiguous water area in Central Europe.
Mirow (Ort des Friedens) is a rural town in the south of the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The town is the seat of the Mecklenburgische Kleinseenplatte district.
Mirow Birthplace of Sophie Charlotte, Duchess of Mecklenburg [-Strelitz] (* 19 May 1744 in Mirow; † 17 November 1818 at Kew Palace in the Royal Botanic Gardens) was a German princess who became Queen of Great Britain and of Ireland (from 1801 of Great Britain and Ireland) and Electress of Brunswick-Lüneburg and later Queen of Hanover through marriage to King George III as Queen Charlotte.
The small town of Mirow is located in the middle of the Mecklenburg Lake District, at the southern end of Lake Mirow, which is connected to the Müritz via a whole chain of lakes, rivers and canals and to the Havel via the Mirow Canal, which is part of the Müritz-Havel Waterway. There are several larger lakes in the municipal area, such as Lake Labus, Lake Vilz, Lake Rätz and the Granzower Möschen. The history of the village as a German settlement goes back to a settlement of the Order of St. John, to whom Prince Heinrich Borwin II donated 60 hectares of land in the land of Turne in 1226. When this donation was confirmed by Borwin's sons, a village of Mirow was already mentioned. By 1242 at the latest, the Order's settlement on the shores of the lake had developed into a commandery. In the following centuries, the Order's land holdings continued to grow steadily.
From 1500 to 1900 In the course of the 16th century, the dukes of Mecklenburg gained greater influence over the occupation of the commandery and the appointment of commanders in the course of continuing disputes with the lord masters of Sonnenburg. After the last commander of Mirow died in 1541, the commandery was administered only by Protestant administrators, most of whom came from the ducal house of Mecklenburg. in 1648, the commandery was finally secularised and assigned to the (partial) duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin as compensation for other territorial losses. The Hamburg settlement brought Mirow to the (partial) Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1701. In the meantime, large parts of the commandery's property had been converted into a ducal Mecklenburg administrative office with its seat in Mirow.
Since the transfer of the Order's property in Mirow to the ducal house of Mecklenburg at the end of the 16th century, the commandery house on Mirow Castle Island was repeatedly used as a princely residence. The domanial office of Mirow was responsible for providing for the widows of the dukes or for the side lines of the Mecklenburg dynasty. Duke Johann Georg, for example, a descendant son of Adolf Friedrich I, received Mirow as an appanage in the second half of the 17th century. When a major fire in 1742 destroyed the last building complexes of the commandery and the castle, which had been built in the early 18th century as a single-storey half-timbered building, a new castle complex in the Baroque style was built between 1749 and 1752 north of the church according to plans by the court architect Christoph Julius Löwe, an ensemble of buildings that can still be experienced today.
While the Mirow court had developed into an important intellectual centre of Mecklenburg-Strelitz as late as the 1740s, with the change of government in 1752/53 the princely court in Mirow gradually ceased and finally came to an end in 1761 with the death of the dowager duchess Elisabeth Albertine. Since then, Mirow Castle has led a quiet, dreamy existence and only came to life briefly when a member of the Strelitz ruling dynasty died and was buried in the princely tomb, which was added to the church in 1704.
Towards the end of the 18th century, Jews were resident in the village. Around 1800 they built a Jewish cemetery, which was completely destroyed during the National Socialist era. In the GDR era, a memorial stone was placed there.
In 1820, the Grand Ducal Teacher Training College of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was opened in the secondary castle (the so-called Lower Castle), which was built between 1735 and 1737 outside the old castle district and initially remained unfinished after reconstruction in the 1760s.
