Ogliastra is Sardinia's least know province but surely not less beautiful and interesting than the others. Ogliastra's origins date back to the Neolithic Age and the most populated area of that time was the coast. Further to the raids of the pirates on the coast, people of Ogliastra had to move in the inland. From this point on they created their first villages that have now become towns. These towns, represented high Ogliastra and its means of support were bovine, goat-breeding and agriculture. Megalithic findings like "Menhir"and "Domus de Janas", confirm that the ancestors who lived in this area were Pagans. The Menhirs are big blocks of stone, about 15 meters high, built during the Stone Age. Normally, these works are smooth and in rare cases, you can notice engravings representing "Mother Goddess". The "Domus de Janas", are sepulchral buildings, excavated in the rock with different shapes. These constructions can be found in all Sardinia as in Lotzorai where you can count more than 15. The sites chosen for these buildings were probably decided with an extreme care in order to find a peaceful and calm place. Ogliastra is also known for findings that date back to the Nuraghe Age.
The territory counts more than 200 hundred samples between "Tholos" nuraghi, "Tombe dei Giganti (giant's graves)" and "holly wells and springs". All these works were placed in specific areas depending on their function. Normally, they raised along obliged transit ways, volcanic reliefs, or plains near water springs. During the 7th century B.C. Ogliastra was under the Phoenician rule, later on, under the Punic. Baunei is a small tourist centre located in the eastern centre of Sardinia at 14km circa away from the port of Arbatax and at 150km circa from the ports of Cagliari and Olbia. The town was built on a calcareous cost facing south-west, and looking towards Gennargentu Mountains’ highest tops and the gulf of Arbatax. Baunei is without doubt one of the best places in the island, that offers a breathtaking view. A terrace in front of the sea and the mountain in which you can eat and touch glasses with friends. If you are looking for a holiday in Sardinia in which you can discover typical archeology, anthropology and nature of the area, Baunei turns to be the best choice. The town offers crystal waters and a mountain landscape at the same time. Moreover, you have the opportunity to be guided by experts, who live the mountain every day, and who will take you through unique and fascinating tracks that lead to beautiful coves as the ones of “Goloritzé" and "Sisine", that can be reached by earth exclusively from the Supramonte of Baunei.
The territory spreads out for 220 km circa and is ploughed by deep valleys crossed by little water streams called ”codule”, that flow into the sea for over 40 km along the cost. Inside the gulf there are the famous coves of “Luna”, “Mariolu”, “Goloritzé”, “Biriala” and “Sisine” which interrupt the ramparts and the calcareous falaise and turn the coast in one of the most beautiful of Italy and probably of the entire world. The calcareous stone overlooks the entire gulf and is surrounded by different kind of “gorges” ,”cliffs” and “caves” which are all considered of peerless beauty.Behind the town there is the upland of the “Golgo”, where Saint Pietro’s country church (XVII century), the abyss of “Su sterru” (one of the deepest in Europe), the nuraghi and “Piscinas”(natural basins used to contain rainwater), are surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation. The upland offers beautiful dirt tracks through which you can reach the coves; small beaches formed along the coast. Specialized guides escort every year hundreds of tourists attracted by wild landscapes and by settlements that date back to the Nuraghi Age. Along the street that links up Baunei to Santa Maria Navarrese you will find the access to another wonder of “Pedra Longa”. The monolith, also named “Agugliastra”, is approximately 128m high and is an integral part of Baunei’s calcareous planking that covers a wide territory that goes northward, from Santa Maria Navarrese to Cala Luna. Near “Pedra Longa” and “Punta Giradili” there are some of the most beautiful mountain faces to be climbed in Europe. These walls are well known from Rock climbing lovers and have been baptized by them as “Villaggio Gallico” and “Creuza de Mà”. If you like free climbing there are several armed routes which can be done also by beginners. The town offers a great number of cultural events and religious recurrences as well. Processions in traditional costumes and masses held in the parish church of Saint Nicola, patron Saint of the town, or in the country Churches of Saint Lussorio and Saint Lucia, Saint Pietro and Saint Mary. The opening of Baunei’s historical houses is a very popular event that can’t be missed. During this occurrence, called “Cortes Apertas”, people of the place, present their traditional “art” and “flavors”. This occasion gives you the opportunity to go for a walk along the town old streets and admire Baunei’s typical costumes; taste typical dishes offered in each house and see ancient jobs related to everyday life. You will see for example how the milling of wheat was done; how the typical potato bread called “Turredda” was prepared; the shoeing of horses; how to prepare Shepherds’ typical bread (Su Pistoccu) and “Culurgiones”(a first dish with a unique taste), and Baunei’s typical sweet, called “su Cunfettu”, which was prepared in the past as today for weddings. Jobs and recipes are demonstrated along the old streets, as well as Sardinia’s typical knife handicraft (S’arrasoa) and the “ox car” assemblage. Choral singing and dancing in costume with the sound of the accordion give value to the event. The occasion is also good to visit the ethnographic museum situated near Saint Nicola’s parish church.

additional informationTrekking is one of the most practiced sports in Sardinia and particularly in Ogliastra and Barbagia. The particular morphology of the territory make this sport practicable year long both from experts and beginners. For those who don't know the meaning, "Trekking" is an English word that means "to walk", walk slowly.Italians normally combine this word with hiking because it is generally practiced on the mountains or in similar places and always in straight contact with nature.
Those who have this passion come to Sardinia every year to experience new tracks or to cover old paths. Trekking can be done at all levels but there is a common rule for everyone: seriousness and respect. Seriousness when practicing this sport, respect of plants and animals, respect of the paths without doing anything that could compromise them, protection of the environment and team spirit represent some of these rules.. Ogliastra is considered one of the best places to practice this sport. The upland is full of tracks traced by shepherds who used them as mule tracks while today, they have become real tourist tracks visited by thousand of those who are keen on trekking. Each path is considered more wonderful and fascinating than the other and this is the main reason why experts and beginners come to visit these landscapes of unquestionable beauty. Wild places, far away from city traffic and chaos, where silence reigns from centuries. Many shepherds use to live here since sheep farming was the main source of profit.During your trekking you'll understand how shepherds use to organize their life on the mountain and the talent with which they built sheepfolds and animal stables. If we have this heritage today, it's also due to them because besides sheep farming, they controlled the territory and watched over any type of robbery. As you'll see along the paths, nature has been particularly generous with these landscapes. These tracks offer you all earth wonders: age old plants, streams on the rock, mountain ridges, spires, water and wind smoothed arches, dry walls and so on. We suggest that beginners and experts, who don't know the area, should go around with local tourist guides who will show you all Sardinia's most charming and less known corners. This is the best way to live Sardinia, to understand the importance of the mountain for Sardinian people and the special emotions felt by those who choose this place every year for their holidays. Bernard Grzimek wrote: "humans of coming decades and centuries will stop visiting technology's wonders and begin to feel nostalgia and to come back where only God's creatures still live in peace.Towns that will have saved these places will be the only ones to be blessed and envied by the others because they will be visited by tons of tourists. Nature and its inhabitants aren't as buildings destroyed by war. Those can be built again while, if we kill nature, no one will be able to make it revive.
