Location and surroundings of object
. According to archeological studies, Lotzorai was inhabited in the Bronze Age and from the seventh century , the village was first under the Punic rule and then under the control of the Romans. The town received its official name in 1117, the same period in which the town of Donigala was built. During the Spanish occupation in 1300, Lotzorai was part of the feudal organization and under the rule of the Spanish legend says that the town's name came from its first inhabitant called "Lozoranus" who was a farmer resuscitated from a Saint. Other studies tell us that the first real village was "Ogliastro", today known as Donigala. People here decided to build new towns, as the highest part of Lotzorai, today "Cuccureddu" and in the mountains in order to escape from sea invasions and from all difficulties related to are just few legends around the possible origin of the town, which can't be taken entirely for real. Along the road that takes you from Lotzorai's suburb to Tortolì, you can admire the ruins of the medieval castle of Medusa.
If you observe carefully, the castle can be easily mistaken for a military outpost raised on a hill in order to protect the near port probably sited in a pound close to Girasole. We recommend visiting the castle because the hill offers a great view of the entire town, the small Island in front and the calcareous block close to Baunei. Several legends on this castle continue to live and one of them in particular, tells that a queen lived and died "Domus De Janas" (Fairy house) is an archeological site that can't be missed and which represents collective graves, similar to real homes, which were excavated in the site is at a short distance away from Lotzorai, along the street Lotzorai-Talana-Urzulei and at only 2300 meters from Sardegna Holiday apartments. In the last years, the town has adopted ameliorative measures and now there are well traced tracks that take you inside the territory, as well as the one along the sea, is rich of archeological findings. The Nuraghe Age is evident but it's also possible to find flotsams belonging to different ages, which re-emerge close to the seashore. Lotzorai stands on the sea, in one of the most charming, uncontaminated and striking coasts of Baunei's territory as the ones of Cala Sisine, Cala Luna, Cala Mariolu, Grotta del bue Marino (the Sea Ox cave) and Grotta del Fico ( Fig's cave), respectively in Dorgali and Baunei. The town is built on the sea but we must not forget the importance of the Supramonte that rises on the back because, all the paths that take you to the coves, start from there. Lotzorai's main tourist attraction is represented by the long strip of white and fine sea in front is crystal and rich of fish, with a sandy depth full of life. Behind the beach, there is a long and rare pinewood where you can enjoy fresh air during hot summer days. Lotzorai has several beaches which can be visited by a great number of tourists and that are never crowded even during high season. However, if you wish to move to a calmer area, you just have to move the bath towel and the beach umbrella where you front of Lotzorai's beaches and in between the port of Arbatax and the tourist port of Santa Maria Navarrese, there is the small island of Ogliastra. Maps identify it as just a rock but people of Lotzorai and all nature lovers consider it a real paradise surrounded by Crystal Sea and rich and colored paths.

In Italian, this term is associated with excursions, because this activity is mainly practised in mountains, etc. and one remains in close contact with nature. Numerous enthusiasts come to Sardinia every year to discover new paths or to revisit those already known for their beauty. Trekking can be practised at different levels of difficulty, but nevertheless, for all levels: seriousness and respect for this seriousness of this sport, respect for nature, animals without practising activities harmful to them are some of the rules for the excursionists to feel one with nature. The territory of Baunei is one of the most suitable areas for this sport. Here there are many paths that used to be "used" by shepherds and nowadays by nature lovers. Trails that are different and all interesting in their own way, allow laymen and experts to discover landscapes that undoubtedly have an unmistakable beauty. This is the wild nature far from the traffic and the chaos of the city, where the tranquillity of the past decades, these places were used by shepherds and the shepherds' huts etc. show how they organised and lived at that time, making a clear contribution to protecting nature and leaving it in its traditional state. Therefore, you will discover places where nature has done a unique job and centuries-old trees, small rivers in the rocks, mountain peaks and rock arches will let you in on the "secrets" of this landscape. We recommend that laymen and experts who don't know the area join a guide who will take you to the most beautiful places with professionalism. Don't miss this opportunity to understand Sardinia and why this landscape plays a special role for its inhabitants. Bernard Grimek wrote: "In the coming decades and centuries, humanity will no longer visit the novelties of technology, etc., but the places where God's created beings lived in peace. Let the countries that have protected these places be blessed and envied by others, because they will be the attraction for numerous tourists. Nature cannot be compared to buildings destroyed in war, because these can be rebuilt, unlike nature."
